August 4, 2010 - EMILY MADDISON SCORES POLE POSITION, HEAT RACE WINS AND FAST LAP AWARDS AT WCC

Scudeira PCR and ODKarts.com driver Emily Maddison had another terrific weekend at the final round of the Western Canadian Championships (WCC) held in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada this past weekend. Taking place at the ultra fast Stratotech Park, Maddison could be seen at the front of the Rotax Junior field throughout the weekend scoring a pole position, heat race win and two second place results.

After pacing the field during Friday’s official event practice, Maddison was looking forward to the wheel-to-wheel racing that would take place on Saturday. First on the docket was qualifying where the young and talented female would turn the quickest lap of the session and garner the pole position. Mathematically still capable of claiming the title, the PCR driver would look to carry her momentum throughout the weekend.

The prefinal was nothing but perfection for Maddison as she took the lead at the drop of the green flag. Circulating the fast Stratotech Park facility, Maddison led almost every lap as she went on to claim the heat race win and pole position for the main event.

With a chance to sweep Saturday’s racing action, Maddison rocketed to the lead at the drop of the green flag in the main event. It would come down to her and eventual WCC champion Garrett Grist for the win as the duo pulled away from the rest of the field. Maddison turned the quickest lap of the event as well as led the most laps in the final but could not lead the most important one as she became the bridesmaid by .089 to Grist.

Sunday would start off a little slower for the female from Calgary as she would claim the second quickest time in qualifying and would be forced to start from the outside of the front row. The prefinal was short lived for Maddison as a broken motor mount would force her to retire from the event in the early stages as well as provide her with a last row starting position for the main event.

Full of aggression, Maddison started her assault on the Rotax Junior field as soon as the green flag flew for the final. Looking like a seasoned veteran, the Ryan Perry (RP Motorsports) tuned PCR began its march forward. Passing karts lap after lap, Maddison moved into the lead on lap three as she began to settle into a rhythm at the front of the talented Junior field.

As they did on Saturday, the duo of Maddison and Grist would be nose to tail racing hard for the final few circuits. In an epic battle that went on for laps, Maddison would fall victim yet again to the already crowned champion as she crossed the stripe in the second position scoring her second podium result of the weekend.

“I would like to congratulate Garrett as well as my teammate Austin King on a great series and some clean racing,” explained Maddison after the event. “I was hoping for a little better result today and in the championship but gained a lot of experience. The WCC gets better and tougher with each passing year.”

Maddison would end the six race Western Canadian Championships with a third place result in the overall title chase.

South of the border, Maddison has been showing her speed aboard a Tony Kart chassis at both the Superkarts USA Pro Tour and the WSK North American Series. In her first trip to USA International Raceway in Shawano, Wisconsin, Maddison worked with John Zartarian and was at the front of the field in the TaG Junior category. Well inside the top five, Maddison was removed from the race in Saturday’s final due to a mechanical malfunction while Sunday she was involved in an incident taking away two solid top five results.

Two weeks later, Maddison, along with tuner Ryan Perry, travelled to the New Jersey Motorsports Park facility for the WSK North American Series event. Battling hard with series regulars and North America’s front runners, Maddison would score a fifth place result on Saturday. Looking to improve on Sunday, the TaG Junior main event was cancelled due to a torrential downpour causing damage to the paddock and race track. Results were made official after the prefinal and Maddison was classified in sixth.
