May 20, 2011 - Event Preview: Western Canadian Championships - Round #1 - Chilliwack
The ever-growing and popular series, the Western Canadian Championships (WCC) are set to kick off this weekend with the opening round of the three weekend, six race series. Hosted by the West Coast Kart Club, the WCC will take to the Greg Moore Raceway in Chiliwack, BC. Set in the picturesque forests of this mountainous region east of Vancouver, karters from across Canada will ascend for the first round amid hopes of landing a prestigious spot on Team Canada, or to take in the debut of the Briggs and Stratton LO206 engine, two of the popular headlines surrounding the series, now in it’s fifth year of competition.
As the designated Rotax Max Challenge series in the west, buzz surrounding the series will be the four spots on Team Canada for the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals to be held later this year in Ali-An, Dubai. The champion of the Rotax Senior, Rotax Junior, Rotax DD2 and Rotax DD2 Masters divisions will receive an invitation to travel to the international event known as the ‘Olympics’ of karting.
While multiple top drivers from the western portion of Canada will see action, a select few will make the trek westward from their native eastern region to take part in the series. Perennial front runner Kyle Herder will compete in the DD2 category with GBR Karting while hoping to follow in the footsteps of 2010 Rotax Junior title winner Garrett Grist.
Gatorz Challenge of Americas Rotax Junior champion and 2011 Team Canada member Parker Thompson is expected to compete in the WCC program in the junior category while Superkarts USA (SKUSA) Pro Tour driver Emily Maddison will look to continue her success in Rotax Senior. Common west coast karting names like Dowler and Choquer will also be on the dance card as they try and start their Canadian karting season off with a race win.
2010 Rotax DD2 Masters World Champion Scott Campbell is expected to defend his title in WCC competition while 2009 Rotax Senior champion Chris Glover will look to start his quest for another championship on home turf on the right foot.
Apollo Motorsports, Overdrive Motorsports and BBR Karting squads are expected to join GBR Karting as the premiere teams in the series as the WCC program continues to expand. With the already secured qualifying spots to the Rotax World Finals and the addition of the Briggs and Stratton L0206 engine, the Western Canadian Championships are continuing to gain momentum to be one of Canada’s best karting series.
Following Chilliwack, the WCC will head to Saskatoon over the Canada Day holiday weekend, and the series will wrap and champions will be crowned at the finale in Calgary. For more information on the WCC, visit http://www.wcckarting.com
